Chile to Seek End to Copper Revenue for Military, Tercera Says

Chile's finance ministry is writing a bill that calls for ending a requirement that state-run Codelco, the world's largest copper producer, direct 10 percent of its revenue to the military, La Tercera reported.

The government will negotiate a new method of financing weapons purchases with the armed forces and defense ministry, the newspaper reported, citing finance ministry officials it didn't identify.

The government plans to send the legislation to congress by the end of 2008, the newspaper reported in its online edition.
