China March Steel Output up 22.5 Pct on yr

The March output would translate into a daily production rate of 1.77 million tonnes, sligtly below the February daily level of 1.8 million tonnes.

Output in the first quarter reached 158 million tonnes, up a quarter compared to the same period last year, data from the National Statistical Bureau showed.

Many have been concerned that a combination of overcapacity and economic retrenchment would eat into demand this year after the industry posted record output volumes in 2009, but some analysts suggested the worries had been overstated.

"Demand is going to be much higher than what everyone expected and will reach another historical high this year," said Jim Jia, senior analyst with Shanghai-based consultancy Mysteel.
