| The global aluminum market was in a 264,000 metric ton surplus in the first two months of 2010, the World Bureau of Metal Statistics said Wednesday.
That compares with a 738,000-ton surplus in the first two months of 2009, and with a surplus of 546,000 tons in the whole of 2009, the WBMS said.
Demand for primary aluminum in the two-month period totaled 6.35 million tons, 1.436 million tons more than the equivalent total in 2009.
Overall, global production rose in January and February by 963,000 tons after a 2.9 million-ton decline throughout 2009. WBMS estimates China's output at 2.655 million tons in January and February, accounting for 40% of the world production total.
In February, primary aluminum production was 3.244 million tons and consumption was 3.2 million tons.
Global demand rose by 29% in January and February compared with the very depressed levels recorded a year ago, although WBMS didn't provide figures.
