UHMWPE is impressive because it has a much higher strength-to-weight ratio than nylon. The tensile strength is about 15 times that of steel and 40 per cent greater than that of an aromatic polyamide by weight. This makes UHMWPE about half the weight and width of nylon.
UHMWPE is thinner, lighter, more packable and more flexible than nylon.UHMWPE is easier to rack and expand due to its small, lean and flexible nature.UHMWPE is also more resistant to UV damage and abrasion. In real-world climbing situations, this UV resistance may not significantly affect strength.Due to the ultra-tight weave of UHMWPE, it absorbs less water and even floats. Because it absorbs significantly less water, it is ideal for ice climbing and mountaineering, as slings are less likely to freeze than nylon.
