Their most important function is to insulate charged bodies. In the electrified railway contact network power supply system, insulators block the 27.5kV high-voltage electricity on the contact line and guide it to the grounding pillar through the support device, thereby avoiding the pillar from becoming a high-voltage live body, ensuring the safety of railway power supply and the safety of life along the railway. The reason why hey can block current is that they are made of insulating materials, and in order to better insulate, their bodies are often presented in the shape of stacked discs and umbrellas. If there are no extreme external factors, their service life can reach 10 to 40 years.

There are mainly 2 types. Firstly, porcelain insulators, they are mainly composed of electrical ceramic parts and galvanized steel caps, which are assembled by cement glue. The porcelain parts, which resemble stacked plates, are made by firing quartz, feldspar, and clay with extremely high insulation performance. The surface of porcelain insulators is usually covered with porcelain glaze, which is waterproof and wettable. While increasing surface smoothness, it can also improve anti fouling performance, corrosion resistance, and enhance mechanical strength, dielectric strength, and thermal stability.Secondly, composite insulators, they are mainly composed of glass fiber epoxy resin pull rods, silicone rubber umbrella sleeves, and metal accessories. The form of large and small umbrellas can provide better anti pollution performance. Compared to porcelain insulators, they have the characteristics of small size, light weight, high tensile strength, and excellent anti fouling performance.
