Shanghai Metal Corporation is a leading spandex manufacturer and supplier.
Spandex (also known as elastane or by the brand name Lycra) is a lightweight, synthetic fiber renowned for its exceptional elasticity. Chemically, it is a segmented polyether-polyurea copolymer, typically produced by reacting a diol (e.g., polytetrahydrofuran or an ester diol from adipic acid/glycols) with a diisocyanate (most often methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate)) and chain-extending diamines. Invented in 1958 by Joseph Shivers at DuPont, the name ‘spandex’ is an anagram of ‘expands’ and is the preferred term in North America, while ‘elastane’ or ‘élasthanne’ is used in Europe, and ‘Lycra’ remains a leading trademark globally. Spandex’s unique combination of stretch, comfort, and resilience has made it a cornerstone of modern textiles.
